Put Away That Road Trip Music Playlist – This Summer It’s All About Air Travel. Here’s KG’s List of Top 10 Tunes For Flying.

Graphic of pasangers listening to music during flight

How many musicians have found inspiration while staring dreamily out the airplane window? We can’t say for sure, but judging from all of the aviation-themed music out there, the number has got to be significant.

In honor of all the individuals taking to the skies this summer, we’ve put together a music playlist of our top 10 favorite high-flying songs.

10. This Flight Tonight – Joni Mitchell

Though the lyrics are a little bit depressing, in honor of the woman whom David Crosby recently told the Huffington Post is “probably the greatest living singer-songwriter,” we had to include it in our top 10.

9.  Big Jet Plane – Angus & Julia Stone

This indie pop ditty was a hit back in 2010, having won the Australian Single of the Year Award at the ARIA Music Awards. It currently has more than 23 million views on YouTube. Definitely worth a listen.

8. Leaving On A Jet Plane – Peter, Paul and Mary

John Denver wrote and recorded this one first, but we really like Peter, Paul and Mary’s version. Both are great, though, so you’ll have to choose for yourself.

7. Danger Zone – Kenny Loggins

The theme song to what is arguably Tom Cruise’s greatest film (Top Gun), Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone” video channels all of the 1980s’ aviation-loving goodness. Click for the song, stay for the really great hairstyles.

6. Learning To Fly – Tom Petty and/or Pink Floyd

Both of these songs are awesome and we couldn’t decide which one to feature here, so we’re including both in our number six spot. If you have a preference, tweet it to us; we’d love to know if Petty or Pink rules in our readership!

5.  Fly Away – Lenny Kravitz

Coolest rock star ever? We think so, but you can form your own opinion. Kravitz is currently on a world tour. This July, he’ll be rocking out in Switzerland, but he’s heading back stateside soon.

4. Come Fly With Me – Frank Sinatra

Released in 1957, “Come Fly With Me” is still a cross-generational favorite. There’s something about packing up and flying away that appeals to everyone.

3. The Letter – The Box Tops

“Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane, ain’t got time to take a fast train. Lonely days are gone. I’m a-goin’ home. My baby just wrote me a letter…” We actually forgot all about this song, until going to watch the movie Minions, where it is featured in the soundtrack. It’s another “oldie but goodie” – and with airline ticket prices the subject of collusion and price-fixing accusations right now, it’s a good thing these guys don’t care how much money they gotta spend, right?

2. Drunk On A Plane – Dierks Bentley

We’re not endorsing anything here, we just like the song, ok?

1. Jet Airliner – Steve Miller Band

This song is our number one favorite because it’s just one of those songs we imagine being on the soundtrack of a life filled with adventure and taking chances that always finds its way back home.

We hope you like our aviation-themed music playlist, and if there are songs we left out or if you have strong opinions about any of our choices, jump on Twitter and let us know.

Happy travels this summer, and thanks for reading.
